Art Tour Series VI: The Pompidou

I know I'm going to lose some of you with my art museum post, but I am passionate about art, so I will be true to myself.  One of my favorite ( I say that every time) museums is the  Centre Pompidou in Paris, France.  My son is about to spend some time between Italy and France where the most glorious examples of art on the planet live and breathe.  I am so envious.  We went to Paris in 2010, and Im still reeling.

The Pompidou is a refreshing contemporary art museum.  After spending 4 hours at the Louvre viewing classic, Renaissance, antiquities and XVII century art, we had to 'cleanse our palettes' with some modern art.

The Centre was founded by President Georges Pompidou and designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and British architect Richard Rogers.  It's doors opened in 1977 to provide a cultural art center that coincided with  theater, music, literature and fashion centers in the heart of Paris.  The 'constraint-free' architecture enables one to view the interior of the museum from the outside, and color coded ducts and architectural elements flank the exterior windows.  The interior was designed without rooms, but more of an open exhibition concept that allowed natural light in from all sides.  The views from the Pompidou reach from the quaint neighborhoods, rooftops,  and cathedrals to the far reaching Sacre Coeur in the hilltop of Montmartre.

They have 30 exhibitions per year.  We saw an exhibit on Lucien Freud , one of our favorites, while we were there.

Some other artists of note were Lee Bontecou,

Kristin Baker,

Christina Iglesias,

Annette Messager,

Henry Moore,

Marc Chagall,

 Frank Stella,

Yaacov Agam whose work was interactive and kinetic,

Max Ernst,

There was a model of sculptor Constantin Brancusi's (1876-1957) studio. I loved the rudimentary tools he used.

Viewing museums gives me a more worldly perspective of art.  I can appreciate every style and genre, and see into the soul of an artist.  The Pompidou is up there with my top five museums of all time.  Do you have an art  museum, an artist or a any museum for that matter that has made a lasting impression? Do tell.

Treasure Hunters bring your pocketbooks

If you live anywhere near Leesburg, VA, and believe me 2 hours away is not too far to drive for a sale this great, there is a fantastic event at the Old Luckett Store August 31-Sept. 3rd.

The Old Lucketts Store Blog

I love their new tagline of Vintage Hip!

The Old Lucketts Store is where we have gotten many a unique find, from Bethany's Lochness table to antique corbels in her big ORC reveal.

They have a monthly interior design showcase where everything in the house is for sale.   Once a year they have a huge Ground Hog Day sale with steep discounts.  This sale IS GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN this LABOR DAY WEEKEND!  The grounds feature a salvage yard with tons of old doors, windows, shutters, and antiques, while indoors there are a multitude of antique dealers and treasures.

Another new offering at the store is Miss Mustard Seed's new line of milk paint, which I am dying to try.  She is an antique dealer at Lucketts Store, and has a fabulous and informative blog.

Her milk paint line is launching August 30th! Congratulations Marion!

Hope to run into some of you this weekend! If you are going email me and maybe we can meet!  Enjoy the hunt!

[Ceiling] Obsessed Much?

Hiya Folks!

I'm interrupting my regularly scheduled vacation to bring you a guest post update (and because I miss you all).   I'm over at The Mustard Ceiling today, paying homage to our friend Elizabeth and her blog - talking about the art of incorporating the ceiling into the room design.

If you haven't guessed by now, ceilings are kinda our thing.  We're just really into them, whether we're doing canopies on our current project, or painting them dark colors or revelling in some wallpaper goodness; we love to include the ceiling in a design plan. Kinda like the wonderful ceiling at our favorite Charlottesville haunt, And George

Pop on by The Mustard Ceiling to see the obsession unravel.

the 'goodbye summer' blues

I really can't stand the thought of summer ending!  All the wonderful delicious fragrant things of this season will be gone until next year.  I love the local farmer's market, the smell of ripening fruit on the counter, having my morning coffee out by the pool,  beautiful sunsets, long days full of hot sunshine, trips to the beach where you can wear your bathing suit all day everyday.

I feel the threat of fall already in the air; although that is a wonderful time of year here in Virginia, when the humidity goes away and you need a light sweater.

I'm off to enjoy a long weekend with my partner in crime and the rest of our family at Bethany Beach!!

What are your favorite memories from this summer?
